Without an instrument rating, the flight is always conducted visually and navigated using ground features.
With an instrument rating, navigation is performed using radio navigation equipment, so that visibility outside the aircraft becomes less important.
Landings using an instrument landing system (ILS), for example, are possible up to a decision height of 200 ft and a runway visual range of 550 m.
An instrument rating also makes international flights much easier.
The feeling of breaking through the cloud cover is unforgettable. Let yourself be inspired by the carefree pleasure of flying on an IFR introductory training flight.

Theory courses CB-IR
The theoretical training must comprise a total of at least 80 hours, with at least eight hours to be completed as classroom instruction. We provide you with much more intensive training than is required by law.
We offer 12 hours of classroom instruction via Zoom. This means that you do not need to travel to Hanover or Dortmund for the theoretical training. The classroom instruction focuses on meteorology, with 6 hours devoted to this subject. The theoretical training is generally provided as distance learning via our partner, Cranfield Aviation Training School (Germany) GmbH in Dortmund. The dates for the required classroom instruction can be found here.
The theoretical exam can be taken at any EASA examination authority (e.g., the Federal Aviation Authority in Braunschweig, Austro Control, etc.). You can take the exam in six parts, with four attempts available per subject.
2
Practical training CB-IR
The practical training comprises at least 40 hours, of which 25 hours can be completed on a flight simulator (FNPT II).
If the applicant has already accumulated IFR-PIC time (e.g., with another ICAO license), 30 hours can be credited toward the 40 hours.
Similarly, up to 30 hours can be credited if the applicant has trained with an instructor (FI-IR or IRI) outside of an ATO.
The remaining ten hours must then be completed in an aircraft at an ATO. The use of a simulator is not permitted here.
Our company has its own flight simulator at its Hanover site, and simulators are also available at the Egelsbach site.
Relief for ICAO IR holders (e.g., FAA IR)
If the applicant holds an EASA PPL or CPL + an ICAO instrument rating (e.g., FAA) with 50 hours of IFR PIC time after the rating was issued, the entire practical training is waived or can be credited in full.
A written theory test is also no longer required.
The examiner then conducts an oral examination and ensures that the applicant has sufficient knowledge of meteorology and flight planning.

Requirements CB-IR
- Applicants for an IR(A) or CB-IR must hold at least a PPL(A) or CPL(A) and have at least 50 hours as pilot-in-command of aeroplanes, TMGs, helicopters, or airships, of which at least 10 hours must be on aeroplanes. These requirements must be met at the end of the training.
- The applicant must have a Class 1 or Class 2 medical certificate with pure tone audiometry.
4
License renewal CB-IR
There is no minimum number of hours required to renew your instrument rating. Renewal is based on a proficiency check, which we will be happy to organize for you. Of course, you can also train a little with our experienced instructors before the test to refresh your knowledge.
5
Training costs CB-IR
The training costs amount to approximately €12,911.60 for the complete training program, not including any prior experience. Here you will find our sample offer in conjunction with our current price list. Preisliste.
