PPL(A), Private Pilot License

Flying an airplane independently is a childhood dream for many people. Even as adults, many still long for the freedom above the clouds.

We would be delighted to help you realize this dream. Our experienced and empathetic flight instructors will be at your side from your first trial flight to your first solo flight in the traffic pattern and on to the subsequent extensions of your pilot’s license.

Competence and safety are the maxims of our training activities. We employ only highly experienced flight instructors, use aircraft that are considered the safest in general aviation for training, and have all maintenance work carried out in aircraft hangars that are inspected by the Federal Aviation Authority according to the strictest standards.

To fly an aircraft as a private pilot, you need the appropriate license. Here you can choose between the LAPL (Light Aircraft Pilot License) and the PPL (Private Pilot License).

We generally recommend the PPL. It is valid worldwide (the LAPL is only valid in Europe), can be extended to include various ratings (instrument rating, flight instructor rating, etc.), and there are no restrictions on the number of passengers (maximum of three passengers with the LAPL) or aircraft weight (maximum takeoff weight of two tons with the LAPL).

PPL theory courses

As part of the training, nine subjects must be passed at EASA PPL level. You will acquire extensive skills in meteorology (many people talk about the weather – you will know what the weather will be like), navigation, and aircraft knowledge.

For the theory training, we use a modern distance learning course in cooperation with Cranfield Aviation Training School GmbH in Dortmund. You can work from the comfort of your own home and have access to our experienced instructors at any time, who will guide you competently through the training. The course concludes with a 3-day live seminar, which we can offer you via Zoom or Teams.

The success rate for this course has been 100% in recent months.

2

Practical training PPL

The practical training comprises at least 45 hours, of which you must fly at least 10 hours solo. Within the specified time, we will teach you all the knowledge and skills you need to fly safely.

For example, you will learn various landing techniques that are required for crosswind landings, or navigation using radio navigation equipment.

As part of your PPL training, we will regularly visit commercial airports, which will benefit you after you have completed your training. Nothing will stand in the way of your travel plans, such as flying to Mallorca yourself.

3

PPL requirements

  • There is no minimum age for starting PPL training. The first solo flights can be made at the age of 16, but the minimum age for obtaining a license is 17.
  • A class 2 or higher aeromedical certificate is also required and must be available before the first solo flight. However, training can be started without this certificate.
  • A valid security check (ZÜP) is also required. We will be happy to apply for this on your behalf.
  • We also require an extract from the Central Traffic Register and a signed self-declaration regarding any pending criminal proceedings.

4

Renewal

The private pilot license (PPL) is generally valid for life.

The class rating entered in the license, which initially allows you to fly single-engine land aircraft with a piston engine and a maximum takeoff weight of 2,000 kg, is issued for 24 months.

There are two options for renewing the class rating.

1. Either you complete a proficiency check with an examiner within 90 days before the class rating expires,
or
2. you complete a refresher training course with a flight instructor (minimum duration: 1 hour) within 12 months before the rating expires.

However, the latter option is only available if you have flown at least 12 hours in the class in the 12 months prior to the expiry of the rating, including at least 6 hours as pilot in command, and have performed at least 12 takeoffs and landings.

As over 70% of our flight instructors are also examiners, renewal at Aviators Flight School is usually possible at short notice and without complications.
